Indigenous Groundwater Connections, Knowledge and Values

AGC 2022 Conference Session

This year the Australasian Groundwater Conference is proud to continue hosting a session entirely on Indigenous groundwater values and connections. Indigenous people’s long association and connections to groundwater in Australasia can cover a broad range, such as creation stories, access and use for consumption and survival, or a suite of cultural knowledge associations and understanding of the existence of groundwater. This can include shallow aquifers, springs, soaks, caves and karst systems and areas where groundwater-surface water connectivity is valued or supports important cultural or spiritual values or critical ecosystem services.

By continuing to host this session, following on from the inaugural session in 2019, IAH aim to promote the understanding and importance of Indigenous people’s groundwater connections, use, rights, values and knowledge in Australasia. We hope that this will serve as a catalyst for connecting Indigenous knowledge and science.

The session will comprise two sub-sessions:

1. A technical session that will show case accepted abstracts of studies and projects.
2. A panel session combining key leaders in the groundwater field with Q&A.

Indigenous representatives from the Australasia region, including New Zealand, Pacific, Australia and South East Asia are specifically encouraged to submit an abstract or proposal to present at the technical session. Co-presentations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous representatives are also welcomed. Case studies by non-Indigenous presenters may also be accepted if the presentation is within the broad session theme and addresses a particular issue of relevance to Indigenous groundwater, such as particular case studies: in these cases participants are requested to confirm permission to present the information with relevant Indigenous groups prior to submitting the abstract.

The AGC has committed a limited pool of funds for assisting Indigenous presenters to travel to and attend the conference. If you wish to request this assistance please nominate this on your submission.
